Our idealistic founder was traveling around the world in 1970. He was looking for a business idea that would allow him to help out the world (or at least his own country - the U.S.), as well give him an income. He would finally get the chance in 1983.
Meanwhile, riding around Lisbon, Portugal on a Honda 250 motorcycle, he received a stern warning from the Lisbon Police. He had been weaving in and out of car traffic on his motorcycle, and might have been arrested.
As he watched the Policeman drive away, he felt the need for contemplation. What would Portuguese jail have been like? He stopped in a cafe' to order an espresso with cream, his heart pounding from the brush with captivity.
He sipped the hot drink, reviewed the morning's events, marveled at his good fortune, and hit upon a brand new optimism for the future. His thoughts turned to his idealistic business ideas, ideas he would bring all together some day!
That's when it happened... The powerful mix of espresso, pounding heart, the Mediterranean sea, the salt air, and youth! It came to him...
"That's it! If you will be involved in commerce with human beings, then:
1) Find a superior product to sell that helps Humans (if not with their higher aspirations, then at least with the primary goal of bodily survival), and...
2) Give Graduated Quantity

It hit him just like a spiritual experience, probably because it set him off on his life's purpose.
It was just a big realization
about how to treat customers, once he had found a life-giving product to sell. He started scheming about giving money to customers instead of to advertising
and promotion media.
Advertising and Promotion are huge expenses for most companies
in the world. Why not find ways to divert funds back to customers
instead of ads, and somehow come out ahead, with better sales
totals and happier customers?
We aren’t the only sales company to offer quantity discounts
or even graduated quantity discounts. But, when we started
back in 1983, not only did we pioneer an entirely new industry
(civilian MRE sales), but we started with Quantity Discounts
and have been the only company to keep them all through those
years.
We are continually shocked to find out that other companies
which try to copy our operations and offerings, always seem
to forget about the quantity discounts! It seems they would
rather get full price now and have you come back sooner and
pay full price again. We would argue, “But, they might
not come back at all, if they feel there is no reward for
ordering more”.
We believe in rewarding a customer for a little larger order,
but even better, rewarding them even more for much larger
orders. That is where the GRADUATED discounts came from.
It takes time for you to order. It takes time for us to prepare
and ship even the smallest order. So, to us it makes sense
to encourage you to buy more when you order, so you won’t
need to order again as soon, and we will ship more efficiently.
